When I was a kid my mom always let me lick the cake batter from the mixer sticks. More than likely it was a box cake mix, but it still had raw eggs in it. When my children were growing up, the leading opinion was that raw eggs could have salmonella bacteria so licking the batter was a definite "No!" My kids, who are both adults now, will tell you that I pretty much told them they would drop dead on the spot if they so much as looked at the raw batter. I don't think I was quite that doomsday.

Anyway, I've recently heard that raw egg really isn't a scary thing, at least if it is an egg from a free-range chicken. When I was a kid, the chickens were running around in the backyard. That was as free-range as it gets. But, when my daughters were growing up, I don't think we had any clue about where the chickens roamed, or didn't roam.
